A rich user profile can not only provide your customers with a smoother and more fulfilling experience, it can help you boost your sales and marketing opportunities too!
User Information
The information contained in a user profile provides valuable insight. Not just personal details – like a name, email address, or date of birth; a users’ profile will often contains information like preferences or specific application settings, that they can take with them no matter how they login to a system.
User Credentials
The chances are that the credentials for a user will also be part of their user profile information too, for cases where UserID and Password is used to provide first-factor authentication. But credential information is a particular part of a users’ profile, that often works best when treated as separate information.
Securely Stored
With a users’ profile containing information both of a personal nature – and potentially of a security sensitive personal nature too – storing it securely is of paramount importance. For regulatory compliance at least, one would want to persistently store any Personally Identifiable Information – a.k.a. PII – in some encrypted form. Credential information, on the other hand, is best stored hashed – so that it can never be decrypted and put to malicious use.
Securely Accessed
But it doesn’t just stop at information storage. Accessing of a users’ profile information needs to be handled in a secure fashion, and transporting that information – particularly across the internet – needs to be performed in a secure way too. It makes little difference if information is securely stored, if it’s then subsequently handled in an insecure manner, or transported in an insecure way!
Build it yourself?
You could build support in-house, yourself. That’s true. Click on the image to read more about doing just that, and watch the recording of my related webinar here. If your team has the resources, time, capacity, knowledge, and expertise in developing SSO; deploying Attack Protection; leveraging OIDC and/or SAML for Authentication, Social and/or Enterprise Federation; implementing Passwordless and/or MFA, and/or (optionally) OAuth 2.0 for API Authorization – then it’s definitely an option. But what if there was a better way?
