Australia – often referred to as “The Land Down Under” – comprises the mainland Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. It has a total area of 7,688,287 sq km (2,968,464 sq miles), making it the sixth-largest country in the world and the largest in Oceania. It’s the world’s oldest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent, with some of the least fertile soils. A megadiverse country, its size gives it a wide variety of landscapes and climates including deserts and tropical rainforests.
Hi! 👋 My name’s Peter Fernandez and I’m an Innovator, Consultant and Software Advocate/Architect/Engineer, creating content and building engaging experiences that help tell compelling stories.
2024, as it had been for so many folks, was quite the challenging year for me and I felt like I needed a long enough break to regroup and recharge. After much deliberation, I eventually decided to take a long vacation “Down Under” and as a result created this site dedicated to travelling the Antipodes.
My first visit to the opposite, “foot of the world” was on an adventure road trip to New Zealand with my then-partner, way back in mid-2000. And I made a mental note to go back and do Australia at some point so that I could compare and contrast…. Roll on some two decades, and I finally get to tick doing just that off my bucket list!
Capturing memories typically means taking photographs – and lots of them, too! It’s a tried-and-tested way of helping to “jog the memory” and share experiences with family and friends.
These days, it’s also really easy to do, and the addition of a compelling narrative can help to tell an even more engaging story. I guess that’s why blogging is still as popular as ever 😁
I’ve created this site to share my stories with those interested in reading them. However, I also wanted something a little different from what other travel bloggers have created, so Discovering Australia is dedicated to the destination rather than just me and my experiences.

With modern technology, creating video content is relatively easy, and adding video clips can further help when it comes to bringing a story alive!
However, shooting video footage is only a part of the process: post-production, where cuts are made and music is perhaps added, is equally important.
So, in Discovering Australia, I’ve been developing tips, tricks, and techniques that can make the production process that much easier; helping to create video content that’s more enriching and inclusive.
If you have any suggestions regarding what you think can be improved, or stories about Australia that you’d like to share, then feel free to let me know; your feedback would be welcome. Thank you 🤗
Alternatively, if you have other tales you think would be of interest, covering different destinations or other topics, let us know that too; numerous other Discovery sites are being built so there could be many different ways for you to contribute.
In any case, if you’ve ever thought about producing content but don’t know how, or where, to start, then here’s your chance: simply provide your Name, an Email Address and a short message and discover where getting in touch might take you 😎
